Hollow Knight: Silksong – How to Rollback Difficulty Reduction Patch

A guide for those who want to return the old patch from September 4 BEFORE the difficulty reduction. This means:
-many enemies will start to deal 2 masks of damage again
-gears and sand worms will also deal 2 damage
-benches and bell stations prices will increase + antiquities will cost less currency
-two early game bosses will become harder

Step 1. Console

First, you need to open the Steam console. To do this, enter “steam://nav/console” in your browser.

Step 2. Downloading the old patch

To download the old version of Silksong, copy and paste this command into the console.
For Windows: “download_depot 1030300 1030301 3229726349000518284”
For macOS: “download_depot 1030300 1030302 1365730835793684614”
For Linux: “download_depot 1030300 1030303 8384590172287463475”

For those who are interested in where all these numbers come from:
1030300 is the App ID of Silksong
1030301 is the Windows version of the game
3229726349000518284 is the September 4th patch ID for Windows

So we insert the command and wait for the download of the old version of the game to complete. As soon as downloading finishes, the console will show you this message “Depot download complete” and show the path to the installed game (steam folder -> steamapps -> content -> app_1030300 -> depot_1030301 in the case of Windows). The download progression is not tracked in any way, but you can see the download speed in the task manager.

Step 3. Replacing files and launching the game

The final step is to replace the old game files with the new ones (or rather vice versa). To do this, open the folder with the old version of Silksong you just downloaded (you know the path from step 2). In the second window, also open the current Silksong directory (right-click on Silksong in the Steam library -> properties -> installed files -> overview…).
Delete or copy to another location all the files from the folder of the current Silksong directory and paste in their place the files of the old version that we just downloaded.
If you don’t want the game to update itself in the future, go to Silksong properties -> updates. Here, set “update on startup” and “always pause background downloads”.
You can launch the game as usual via Steam. But if a new patch comes out and Steam requires an update, you will either have to repeat the procedure after the update, or use .exe to launch from the game directory in offline mode.

After all this, you will continue to receive steam achievements. Saves from the new version also work, you do NOT need to start the game again. Enjoy the game!
