Here is a field guide for every dice unlock in the DitD full release! Let me know what other tutorials you would like to see!
This kinda doubles as an achievement guide since the Steam Achievements are linked to these unlocks as well. My goal with the how-to’s is to give you as much information as possible in a condensed format. But I’ll also give tips / tricks that I think will help players as well.
Some of the dice are really powerful, or central to certain build synergies. Best of luck to you as you Die in the Dungeon and fill your Codex!

Dungeoneer’s Notes
Reroll
- Die for the First Time
Blood
- Reach Area 2, the Monarch’s Grove
- Need to beat area 1 and the boss fight at the end (Croissant Chef or Scorpion Rider)
- Keep your deck managed to a reasonable number (between 6-10) and use hollow, double dip, and d4 dice to have consistent output.
- Plan paths to shred tiles to discard basic dice you no longer need
- Aim for early battles as they are easier and will get you coin.
- Plan a path to shops and forges for a boost with the free samples
Close Boost
- Reach Area 3, the Dormant Palace
- Need to beat area 2 and the boss fight at the end (Queen Bee or Mantis Twins)
Void
- Upgrade a Die to Gold Tier for the first time
- Gold upgrades found at the forges in Area 2 and later
- You can find the upgrades as free samples, otherwise they cost 12 coin in area 2. You will need to upgrade a die to silver before it can be made gold
Fortify
- Win 3 battles in a row without taking damage
- Manage your deck down so you are sure to get block each turn
- Use boost or mirror to keep your deck flexible to block or attack as needed
Defensive Mirror
- Win 5 battles in a row without taking damage
- Aim for early battles in each area as the floors get harder in the second half of the area
- Relics like Building Blocks, or makeshift trench can enhance your defense
Prism
- Deal 99 damage in one hit
- Simplest to use a non-glass terrain die to continue to boost a single spot while defending
- Mirror is able to help boost up an attack
Backstab
- Deal 999 damage in one hit
- Some exploit-like behavior that will likely be patched out with mirrors, prism, draw dice
- But again, simplest to use a non-glass terrain die to boost a single spot
- A few relics that give multipliers or major boosts, like Tadpole Jar, Bullseye, Mercenary License, Mark of the Chosen
- The Firefly enemy, Scorpion Boss, and Queen Bee boss also have multiplier possibilities to boost damage
Hollower
- Spend 100 coins
- Aim for more battles and elite battles to earn coin
- Porcelain Witch boosts the amount of coin you receive per enemy
- Coin Dice often come with glass, but that can be removed to farm coins
Offensive Mirror
- Win a run on D2 difficulty
- Harder hits, new enemy actions
- Bosses are stronger
Nurturing Mirror
- Win a run without using dice to heal
- Look to discard your starter heal early and avoid healing dice (you can skip rewards if needed)
- Lean on defense and play conservatively – fight battles early in each area to gain coin and avoid the later more difficult ones
