Fast travel requires venturing into a vault and obtaining Vault Cores. With this you’ll unlock the Lodestone, which is the basis of creating a network of fast travel stations. The more Vault Cores you have the more fast travel stations you can make. For this guide, we’ll be taking a visit to the vault in the southern part of the map. The guide covers three key areas:
- What to expect in the Southern Vault.
- How to unlock fast travel.
- Tips to consider when fast travelling.
At the time of writing this guide, bow skills are yet to be implemented in the game. Despite this, bows are very powerful and are the author’s preferred weapon. Even without skills, arrows do about 25-30 damage and can be fired continually at enemies over a relatively long distance. Fang arrows require basic materials and its very easy to amass 1000 arrows with a few minutes of farming rats and chickens.
To unlock the Ash Shortbow:
- Pickup flax, the blue looking plant that grows around the abandoned village where the Wise Old Man resides. Flax will unlock the Spinning Wheel.
- Build a Spinning Wheel (requires 12 ash logs, 4 flax and 2 stone) and process some flax to make Coarse Thread.
- Coarse Threat will unlock the Bone Dagger, Ash Battlestaff and the Ash Short Bow.
33 fang arrows are made with 1 small fang, 1 wood and 1 feather. Small fangs come from giant rats and chickens drop feathers. Make a couple hundred arrows.

Preparations
- Ensure your thirst, hunger and sleep meters are maxed.
- Empty your bag of all unnecessary items – Vault Cores weight 50 and there are three in the vault.
- Take at least 10 food and 10 water.
- Take your weapon(s) – at least 1 melee weapon. (Take 300 arrows if you’ll use the bow).
Head to the southern vault.
Vaults 101
- Vaults are basically linear caverns which include traps and enemies. There are some side passages which usually include a chest or rune essence.
- The aim of the vault is to navigate to the end and pull a lever, which will open at least 2 gates. One gate is a short cut back to the entrance, the other is the gate to the Vault Overlord.
- Enemies do not respawn, Enemies will respawn after some time, but any you defeat will remain dead for quite a while.
- If you die in a vault the res stone will be at the entrance (circled below).
All vaults are full of obstacles – fire traps and spiked floors. The enemies you’ll face in the southern vault are listed in the order you’ll face them:
- Vault Guardian Hulks – melee with a jumping slam attack.
- Vault Guardian Sentinel – ranged magic user. Also has an attack that pulls spikes up from underneath you.
- Giant Rats – same as in the starter area but in the vault they hit much harder.
- Goblin Runts – same as in the abandoned village but they hit much harder.
- Vault Overlord – stronger version of a Hulk with same moves. Has an additional sweeping move. Hits like a truck and has a lot more health.
The aim is to pull the lever behind the gate.
Navigate through the vault. Defeat the obstacles and enemies.
Pickup the Vault Core – this is the basis of fast travel
Get to the end and pull the lever
Options
Congrats, you’ve completed the vault. Now you have a few options.

- Fight the Vault Overlord and grab the 3rd Vault Core.
Grab the 2nd Vault Core
From the lever, turn around. Through the window is your prize.
Go down the stairs and return the previous large room. Above you in the top left corner is an opening. Use your Windstep spell and jump up there.
Turn the corner and you’ll face the Vault Core, a chest and a lever. The lever opens the window enabling you to return to the end of the vault.
Fight the Vault Overlord and grab the 3rd Vault Core
Pulling the lever opens the windows and enables you to return to the start of the vault. The lever also opens the window on the other side of the entrance, enabling you to face the Vault Overlord.
The Vault Overlord is a supped up version of a Guardian Hulk. He has a lot of health and hits like a truck. After you defeat him run into his chamber and at the back is the third Vault Core.
How to unlock fast travel
The Lodestone requires 32 stone, 20 rune essence and a Vault Core.
Build and place the Lodestone.
Click on the Lodestone to access the fast travel map. By default you can return to the church at the start of the game.
Using fast travel requires Law Runes (the purple ones), which are made at the Rune Alter.
Tips to consider when using fast travel
As an example: travelling from the abandoned village back to the church.
Moderately loaded (285/400 weight) – will cost 13 Law Runes
Practically empty (15/400 weight) – will cost 1 Law Rune
Remember this as you start to press into the map!!
Fast travelling from the other side of the map back to your base will cost hundreds, if not a thousand Law Runes if you’re fully loaded.
