Broad overview of Chapter 5’s main boss fight, and general advice for getting through it.
Introduction
Obviously, spoilers ahead, but I imagine you already knew that, so lets begin.
Battling
A wise woman once said that in order to win, you must understand your enemy. Me. I said that. Fights in Deltarune usually have a format to them, and the Flowery fight is no exception. The most beneficial thing you can do to improve your odds at winning is to notice the patterns present within the battle itself, so you know what to expect. While I can’t go over frame of the battle, I can give you some general pointers that will help.
The battle is divided into roughly four acts. These acts range in theme and difficulty.
The first act consists of you battling Flowery by himself. This should be rather straightforward. All that is thrown at you are some dashing and parrying. Get a feel for this section, and, when you need to repeat, try to avoid taking damage here.
The second act is the core of the battle. Here, you battle Flowery, and each of the six flowers (who come in sets of two). The sets have their own range of difficulties, with most to least challenging being blue-yellow, aqua-seth, and finally orange-green. Pay attention to their bullet patterns and where they often attack. At the end of the final set with blue and yellow, you will be confronted with another trial. Here, you should answer ‘moss’. You need 50% mercy in order to reach the end.
The third act consists of Flowery again. However, Ralsei will no longer be part of your team. Here, you need 48% TP and Susie’s Idea in order to escape.
The fourth act is the easiest compared to the others. Just climb and mash your sword button, and you should win.
Gaining TP
You’re going to need TP for this battle. A lot of it. There are several ways of acquiring it, and you will probably end up using a mixture of all of them. Let’s discuss them.
- Actions
This is one of three ways you will almost certainly primarily use for gaining TP. S-Action and R-Action each gain you 12% TP every use. Paired together, this sums up to 24% total TP. This results in a much quicker gain than simply defending (which only nets 16%). However, this is not 100% better than defending, for reasons we will discuss in the next point.
- Defending
This is the second of three ways you will probably gain most of your TP. Each character is able to defend and gain 8% TP. That second point is important. Only Susie and Ralsei are able to do their unique actions, while everyone, including Kris, is able to defend. This should, ideally, result in a set up where you have: Kris Defend/Susie S-Action/Ralsei R-Action. All together, this nets 32% TP. Additionally, TP from defending is applied immediately, meaning you could theoretically put both Kris and Susie on Defence, in order to gain 16% immediate TP to be used by Ralsei (such as for a healing spell)
- Dashing & Parrying
This is this is the third and final way you will gain most of your TP. By dashing through blue attacks in this battle, you gain an insane amount of TP. Try to do this when you can, but also prioritize your health. If it helps, take it slow and only do dashes you know you can do.
- Grazing
Being honest, this won’t amount to much. Maybe 10% per round at most. Just don’t worry about it.
- Items
Certain items, like Raw Moon, and Phanta (both attainable at Flowery’s drink dispenser) also grant you TP you can use, around 16%. This can be helpful for quickly raising your TP while also replenishing health. That being said, don’t go overboard here. Pack a couple and call it a day.
Acts
Try to only act with Kris. While this does require a higher TP cost, this frees up Susie and Ralsei for healing, gaining more TP, or whatever else you need to use them for. But, if there’s truly no other options, and you just need to progress for whatever reason, you can do the group act.
Healing
Pack as much Green Tea as you can afford. These grant you 180 HP and will be necessary in order to quickly heal up without using TP. That being said, don’t be afraid to pack a couple other items. Certain items will give you health and TP, or add HP to all party members. There are situations where this is useful. I’d recommend having 7 Green Tea, and then 5 of some combination of Raw Moon, Phanta, and Shikacola
Spells
Both Susie and Ralsei have healing spells. Are these useful? Depends. For the most part, I would wager against using healing spells. You’re going to want as much TP as possible to progress through the fight, and Ralsei’s healing spell takes up almost a third of the full amount. Using healing spells is counterproductive for the most part. That being said, don’t entirely forbid yourself from using them, especially if it’s early into the fight and you want to conserve items.
Kris & Susie
These two should be your focus for healing. They will stay throughout the battle, and you need both alive in order to finish it. Most of your items should be sent to them. Try to keep them above at least half health before you enter the Post-Ralsei section.
Ralsei
Unlike the others, you should try to limit healing Ralsei more than you need to. This is because he is taken away from the fight near the halfway point. This means that any items you use on him will have less long-term value, as they could instead be spent sustaining the health of the main actors of the battle, Kris and Susie.
Backup Plans
Fret not, for I may suggest two backup plans so that you can continue
Losing (Tactically)
As of the first post-Chapter 5 launch patch, losing to Flowery “excessively” now causes him to progressively become weaker after each successive loss. This starts after your third loss, and continues with each loss thereafter. This means that he becomes less difficult over time.
If you really want to get this fight out of the way, try intentionally losing a few times, around 6 times for consistently easier battles. While this does not remove the overall challenge, it should make it far more manageable and less annoying.
Modifications
I can’t really give any advice here, but if you’re seriously stuck, and want to continue playing the story, simply modify the game to your desire. Remember, this is a single player game. If your enjoyment would be enhanced from modifying the game to artificially skip a scene, or make it significantly easier, you are free to do so.
This may or may not break some things, but hey, you can modify that too. The sky’s the limit, champ.
