If you find melon blocks you can mine them, get melon slices, and use dirt to craft them back into melon blocks.
Since you have the chance to get more than 1 melon slice each time you mine a melon block you can use this to quickly get a lot of food. Eating a melon slice alone will give you 2 health, and an oppelberry slice alone 1 health. If you combine these 2 slices into a popsicle the popsicle will give you +3 health and you can carry fewer stacks of popsicles to save inventory space.

If you can, one of the best damage and easiest to get early game weapons is the Gel Bruiser. There are multiple ways to craft it but the easiest is by killing gel cubes and, using the gel and one stick to craft it. It breaks easily but it is very cheap to craft and has good damage.

Using 1 magnetite and a stick you can craft a Key Axe which can cut logs quickly but, it’s main benefit is ease of crafting and good durability and damage output.
