If the v3.1.0 update wiped your progress in Notanote, you haven’t actually lost it. This guide is for anyone who played before that update, uninstalled at some point, reinstalled, and then found an empty save staring back at them. I’ll walk you through pulling the old file off Steam Cloud and putting it back where the game expects it, step by step.
The reason I bother writing this out is that the fix is a little counterintuitive — the data must be sitting in your Steam Cloud the whole time, yet plenty of players assume it’s gone for good the moment the save folder looks empty. It isn’t. You just have to know where to reach in and grab it.
Why Your Save Still Exists
Before the v3.1.0 update, Notanote leaned on Steam Cloud to back up your progress. So even after an uninstall or a fresh install leaves you with nothing locally, the save itself is still stored in the cloud — it just isn’t being pulled back down automatically. That’s the whole reason this recovery works.
Step 1: Download Your Save File
Start by grabbing the backup directly from Steam. Open the remote storage page for Notanote:
- Visit https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=2687160
- Download the PlayerPrefs_Release.xml file.
That XML file is your old save. Keep track of where your browser drops it, because you’ll be moving it in the next step.
Step 2: Swap In the Save
Now you need to put that file where the game reads from. I’d take this slowly, because there’s one part that can bite you.
- In your game library, right-click Notanote and select Properties.
- Click Installed Files.
- Click Browse to open the game’s install folder.
- Open the Save folder.
- Delete any other files in that folder.
- Move your PlayerPrefs_Release.xml file into this folder.
- Launch the game — your save should be restored.
That delete step is the one to be careful with. The Save folder holds the game’s current save data, and if there’s anything in there you’d rather not lose, copy it out to another folder first instead of deleting it outright. I know that sounds obvious, but it’s easy to click past in the moment and only realize afterward. Once the old file is in place and the folder is otherwise clear, the game will pick it up normally on the next launch.
