Scale the Depths: Customer Preferences Guide

I have finally found the favorite and least fish for each customer and their respective hints! This is for the full game (not the demo) Loch Ness area. The customers are listed from the smallest hunger bar to the largest. Explanations for the hints taken from Wikipedia are marked with an “*”. Please feel free to comment if I got anything wrong or if I missed something.

Great Cormorant:
Hunger Bar: 80, 140, or XX (I have not seen the last cormorant yet)
“Got any fish with funny stripes”
The perch is the only fish with prominent stripes reasonably accessible when the Cormorant is unlocked.
Favorite Food: Perch
In response to feeding it the Beithir the cormorant sometimes says “FISH NO FIT IN MOUTH”
The Beithir is apparently the only fish that is too big for the cormorant.
Least Favorite Food: Beithir

Eurasian Otter:
Hunger Bar: 150 or 262
“Feeling a small snack about now!”
“Minnow” is a generic name used to refer to very small fish.
Favorite Food: Eurasian Minnow
“No colorful fellers for me!”
Arctic Char is one of only two red fish in this map(and the biggest).
Least Favorite Food: Arctic Char

Osprey:
Hunger Bar: 240 or 360
“I like my fish plain and simple. Nothing added”
*Smelt is an important food fish in many European countries, as the bones do not need to be removed during preparation due to their softness; the fish can simply be cooked and eaten whole, and the head does not need to be removed.
Favorite Food: Cucumber Smelt
“I like my fish plain and simple. Nothing added”
Eel is the heron’s favorite because it is “fancy” and thus the osprey does not like it.

Grey Heron:
Hunger Bar: 300 or 450
“Do you perchance, carry unagi?”
*Unagi (ウナギ) is the Japanese word for freshwater eel.
Favorite Food: European Eel
“Do you perchance, carry unagi?”
Brook lamprey are primitive fish, so it makes sense that the fancy heron would not like it. Additionally, the sprites of both European Eels and Brook Lampreys are similar in body type in the game but they are very different fish.

Grey Seal:
Hunger Bar: 410 or 615
“Fatty fish make my blubber nice and warm!”
*Salmon is a common food fish classified as an oily fish with a rich content of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Grey and common seals commonly eat Atlantic salmon

Ruffe and three-spined sticklebacks both have spiny dorsal fins.

Selkie:
Hunger Bar: 500 or 750
“Can you guess my favorite?”
This is literally found using trial and error. The best I can say is brown trout are sometimes eaten by seals.

Kelpie:
Hunger Bar: 650 or 900
“The color of heart, I desire something resembling it.”
Arctic Char is one of only two red fish in this map(and the biggest).
Favorite Food: Arctic Char
“All those fish that group together, weaklings.”
Eurasian minnows, cucumber smelt, and are the only fish that form schools or (shoals) in this map.

Nessie:
Hunger Bar: 1000
“I hear there’s something quite scary down there…”
The beithir is a mythical, serpent-creature and from Scottish Folklore and fits the description of a “giant serpent” and “something quite scary”. Additionally, it seems fitting that a mythical beast is fed to a giant, albeit friendly, cryptid.
Favorite Food: Beithir
I found no dialogue hint for its least favorite food, but it does hate minnows and three-spined sticklebacks.
Nessie’s dialogue in response to being fed either fish signals that minnows and sticklebacks are too small for the large creature.

Axolotl
Hunger Bar: 90 or 180
“Small fishies are the best!”
The Northern Anchovy is the smallest fish in the Huatulco map with a size of “miniscule”

“Small fishies are the best!”
Any fish sized “Average” and above are too big for the axolotl.
Least Favorite Foods: Giant Damselfish through Hoga

White-Nosed Coati
Hunger Bar: 140 or 210
“I prefer my fish easy to catch… and easier to eat.”
The Panamic Sergeant Major is an easy fish to catch early in the map and using fairly low-level equipment.

Cortez Rainbow Wrasse are able to be caught at around the same areas as the Panamic Sargent Major, but they have a little dash that can make them harder to catch.

Magnificent Frigatebird
Hunger Bar: 260 or 390
“Got any fancy-lookin’ fish on ya? I’ve got an eye for treasure.”
Scrawled Filefish are fancy looking and hated by the pelican.

Cortez Sea Chubs are the plain fish and loved by the pelican.

Brown Pelican
Hunger Bar: 340 or 510
“Can you guess my fave? It rhymes with scrub”
Cortez Sea Chubs are plain fish and hated by the Magnificent Frigatebird. Also “chub” rhymes with “scrub”.

Atotolin
Hunger Bar: 450 or 675
“I would love to witness the most uniquely shaped life form you can find”
The cornet fish is the least “fish-shaped” creature on this map, being long and thin, while all the others are still vaguely oval.

“There is one below… spiked and dangerous”
The Spot-fin Porcupinefish can inflate to project its spines and is very toxic.

Chupacabra
Hunger Bar: 670 or 1005
“I won’t leave without a feast, so make it a big one.”
It wants a big fish. Specifically, a roosterfish. This is possibly due to the fact that Chupacabras are known to feed on livestock. They are specifically known to feed on goats as the word “Chupacabra” literally means goat sucker in Spanish.
Favorite Food: Roosterfish
“I won’t leave without a feast, so make it a big one.”
It hates fish that are miniscule and tiny in size.
Least Favorite Foods: Northern Anchovy through Three-Banded Butterflyfish

Cipactli
Hunger Bar: 920 or 1840
“…”
According to the mythology Cipactli constantly needs to be fed, so I don’t think it has a favorite or least favorite food as it just eats.

Quetzalcōātl
Hunger Bar: 1600
“A senseless beast lurks below… fell it and bring it to me”
The Hoga is a cryptid and could be considered a “beast”.
Favorite Food: Hoga
There is no hint of a least favorite food, but it does not like the Bluespotted and Red Cornetfish.

Belted Kingfisher
Hunger Bar: 60 and 120
“Black spots, add flavor.”
I have no idea how this is a hint, I think this is a bug. The bluegill do not have black spots, the white crappie does. Additionally, when preparing a White Crappie, a tip may appear in the lower right of the screen saying “Crappie are considered one of the best-tasting freshwater fish.” However, bluegill is the favorite food.

There is no least favorite food hint, but dialogue in response to being fed the disliked fish says that the fish are too big.
Least Favorite Foods: Gar as well as Northern Red, Blackfin, and Lane Snappers

Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Hunger Bar: 145 or 210
“Something with a bit of crunch.”
Crawfish are not fish, they are arthropods and they have hard exoskeletons.
Favorite Food: Red Swamp Crawfish
“Floppy food, is it even real food?”
The flounder is a flat fish, which I imagine means that it is very floppy.

Cottonmouth
Hunger Bar: 275 or 410
“I’m salivating for something green and long…”
The chain pickerel is long and green.
Favorite Food: Chain pickerel
“Don’t bring me some meager fish.”
Fathead Minnows are the smallest fish in the map.
Least Favorite Food: Fathead Minnow

Great Blue Heron
Hunger Bar: 320 or 480
“Do you perchance, carry unagi?”
*Unagi (ウナギ) is the Japanese word for freshwater eel
Favorite Food: American Eel
“Do you perchance, carry unagi?”
White crappie are commonly eaten, and might be too “simple” for the Great Blue Heron.

Bald Eagle
Hunger Bar: 560 or 840
“Food must be big and full of nutrients! How else would one get strong?”
Snappers are strong predators and Northern Red Snappers have high value in fisheries.

“Shelled creatures are not my thing, so keep those away!”

Spotted Eagle Ray
Hunger Bar: 750 or 1125
“Anything easy to eat on hand?”
Both Summer Flounder and White Crappie are commonly eaten fish. Additionally, an in-game tip says “Crappie are considered one of the best-tasting freshwater fish.”

The Spotted Eagle Ray hates catfish.

Bunyip

“Bright creatures burn the eyes… I much prefer the dark”
The Black Sea Bass is both black in color and name.
Favorite Food: Black Sea Bass

Hogfish are bright red.
Least Favorite Food: Hogfish

Alligator
Hunger Bar: 975 or 1460
“I hear there’s something ancient down there, oh how I’d like to taste that.”
The Dimetrodons existed before the dinosaurs.
Favorite Food: Lost Dimetrodon
“Slimy stuff is the worst, leaves your mouth all gross after.”
While catfish can be referred to as “slimy”, this hint refers to the American Eel.
Least Favorite Food: American Eel

Uktena
Hunger Bar: 2000
“I hate those scaly creatures, none of that nonsense for me”
It hates anything with scales, so any creature you have to descale is not liked.
Favorite Foods: Gafftopsail and Blue Catfish
“I hate those scaly creatures, none of that nonsense for me”
It hates all fish with scales. However it should be noted it is indifferent to Red Swamp Crayfish and American Eels as they do not possess scales.
Least Favorite Foods: Every scaled fish.

Seagull
Hunger Bar: 230 or 345
“WHERE ARE THE FISHIES?? ANY CUTE BLU OR ORANGE ONES? THEY MY FAVORITE!”
This is a reference to the movie Finding Nemo, where Marlin the Common Clownfish and Dory the Regal Tang encounter hungry seagulls that say “MINE, MINE, MINE!”
Favorite Foods: Clownfish and Regal Tang
There is no hint for disliked foods, and I could not find a food the seagull did not like.
Least Favorite Food: N/A

Hawksbill Sea Turtle
Hunger Bar: 135 or 202
“A light snack would be nice…”
The Northern Anchovy is the smallest fish in the map.

I guess Moorish Idols and Regal Tangs are floppy fish?

Great White Pelican

“Cod” rhymes with “rod”.

Titan Triggerfish and Blackspotted Puffers are very flashy.

Bottlenose Dolphin

“You got a quick puffer on you? There’s a lott you can do with ‘em!”
Bottlenose Dolphins have been recorded having “fun” with pufferfish, getting them to release toxins so the dolphins can ingest a little.

Pacific Cod are plain fish.
Least Favorite Food: Pacific Cod

Giant Pacific Octopus
Hunger Bar: 690 and 1035
“If only I could get my tentacles on the softest meat you’ve got.”
*Instead, they get their buoyancy from a stiff and gelatinous layer under the skin, which consists of about 90% water and a meshwork of collagen and elastin, acting like an exoskeleton.
Favorite Food: Ocean Sunfish
“Speedy swimmers make for crude consumables.”
Yellowfin Tuna are very fast swimmers.
Least Favorite Food: Yellowfin Tuna.

Great White Shark
Hunger Bar: 900 or XXX (I have not seen the last cormorant yet)
“I’m salivating for some fatty juicy fish meat …”
*Like its relative the oilfish (Ruvettus pretiosus), escolar cannot metabolize the wax esters naturally found in its diet, instead distributing the undigestible oil throughout their bodies. As a result, around 20% of the escolar’s body weight is oil.

There is no hint for disliked food, but the Great White Shark does hate Common Clownfish due to its “lack of meat”.

Mermaid

The mermaid likes fancy fish and the Bigeye Pacific Opah and Spotted Parrotfish fit the description

The Blackspotted Puffer, Escolar, and Ocean Sunfish are not very flashy or “glamorous”.

Orca

“Bigger is better when it comes to food, so give me the largest fish you’ve got.”
Both Apophis 99942 and the Giant Oarfish are in the size category “Comically Big”. However the Giant Oarfish is a real-life fish.

“Bigger is better when it comes to food, so give me the largest fish you’ve got.”
The Orca dislikes fish sized miniscule through small with the exception of the Fangtooth and Cortez Rainbow Wrasse.
Least Favorite Foods: Northern Anchovy, Blackspotted Puffer, Moorish Idol, and Common Clownfish

Kraken
Hunger Bar: 3200
“I hunger for curiosities beyond your mortal understanding. If you bear such things, they will be mine.”
The Fangtooth and Pacific Black Dragon are fish that reside deep in the ocean.

There is no hint for disliked foods and I could not find any disliked foods.
